JUNE 2005. The situation regarding freshwater fishing and especially Bass fishing seems to be getting worse every year.  Nobody talks about the big catch, or the new record or the great day out fishing any more.  Everybody talks about the good old days.  Memories and pictures of bass fishing two or three years ago is all that is left. The reason?

JANUARY 2005. Largemouth bass was stocked in Tamasos dam (at least that is what the Fisheries dept says). Does the fisheries dept know that this predator needs large quantities of baitfish to survive? The only fish stocked for this purpose is carp. Not a particular favorite of bass though. How about tilapia and roach? Or maybe new species such as Bluegill. Although, even if bass was really stocked two years ago,  introducing roach now would probably not work. And this is because the bass will not allow it to grow and increase in numbers. This is exactly what happened in Kalavasos dam and we can see thousands of tiny bass not growing properly and ending up in cannibalism to survive. When stocking a dam a few rules should be followed.

Nothing complicated, just simple common knowledge !!!.

(By the way Aradippou dam needs a predator to keep the balance)

JANUARY 2005. How about stocking some dams with new species like Crappie and Bluegill for example?  Both these species are excellent gamefish that can be caught in numbers even by kids (imagine you and your son or daughter catching a few) and very tasty on the dinner table.  Bluegill is desperately needed as forage fish for Largemouth Bass. Roach is just not good enough.

01-01-2005 The fisheries and Water depts have done it again. There seems to be no end to the mass killing of fish in the Cyprus dams. POMOS DAM IS EMPTY!!! Once again the government officials decided to remove the water from a dam killing thousands of fish. We had reports of Largemouth bass over 2 kilos each, being caught regularly at Pomos dam. Not to mention Carp, Mosquito fish, Roach, Catfish and Perch.

Comments - Fishing in Cyprus

28-04-2004 Kalopanagiotis dam is full again and small rainbows (15-20 cm) have been released.

28-04-2004 Lefka dam is almost full again and small rainbows (15-20 cm) have been released.

10-04-2004 Tamasos dam. Very small rainbows (10-12 cm) have been released. I don't really understand the way fisheries dept think. By the time they grow up it will be summer time and all will die due to the water temperature.

Feb 25, 2004. Lefka dam is EMPTY AGAIN. All water has been removed once more by the fisheries and water development depts and all underwater lifeform DESTROYED for the second time in less than two years. And nobody seems to care. !!! WHY ???

20-02-04. Kalopanayiotis dam is now empty.  The officials will wait for some time and then fill the dam because this is what they are supposed to do. Makes you wonder, doesn't it ???

13-02-2004. Kalopanayiotis dam is going to be empty again soon. Water is already being let to escape and as usual all the fish will be killed! Rainbow trout up to 2 kilos and lots of Largemouth bass (which exist in the dam unofficially!!!) will go down the river. The few lucky ones will reach Lefka dam, but most of the fish will die.

28-01-2004. All the water from Lympia dam was removed once again after almost three years and all the fish went down the river which dried as soon as the dam opening was closed. Thousands of fish including Largemouth bass, Carp, Tilapia, Catfish, Goldfish, Roach, Mosquito fish were killed. Does the story sound familiar??? Guess what: The fisheries department again doesn't know how it happened!!!

And the crime continues...

Jan 2004. Lefka dam is full again but has not been stocked with Largemouth Bass as before. Instead, Fisheries dept are planning to release rainbow trout later this year (2004).

Jan 2004. Aradippou dam is full again but has been stocked only with Carp, Roach, and Mosquito fish. However there is a need for a predator in the dam to keep the balance. Does the Fisheries dept know that???

Aradippou dam is empty - all water has been removed and again all fish KILLED.!!!
