NEW FISH SPECIES IN CYPRUS DAMS

08 August 2009

A new fish species, the Pumpkinseed Sunfish, was recently discovered in some of our dams.  The fish must have been introduced in the dams a few years ago, as it has already reproduced and established in at least four dams: Kouris, Kannaviou, Tamasos and Klirou-Malounda.  We see this introduction as a positive step that will improve fishing conditions in our dams.  The fish will serve as a baitfish for our predators (Largemouth Bass and Zander) and also as an additional sport fish for freshwater anglers.  The sizes of the fish that have been caught or observed are relatively small, indicating that most probably it was introduced 2 or 3 years ago.

Pumpkinseeds are native in the NE United States and they belong to the same family as the Largemouth Bass (Sunfish family). Other members of the same family include the Smallmouth Bass, Bluegill, Crappie etc...  Pumpkinseeds were introduced in Europe about 100 years ago.

More information on Pumpkinseed can be found here.

AND SOME GOOD NEWS...AT LAST...

18 April 2009

After the last few disastrous years, things seem to be improving rapidly for at least some reservoirs. The large inflow of February and March has allowed dams such as Asprokremmos to rebound and offer good fishing for many species.

In addition, the Fisheries Department in association with the Cyprus Police has improved their patrol of reservoirs for illegal fishing, further enhancing the optimistic outlook.

Α very positive note was the accumulation of almost 7 million cubic meters of water in Yermasogia Dam – the greatest volume of water in the dam for almost five years. We would like to believe that this time the management of water will be more reasonable, something which will enable great fishing in future years. We must note here that Yermasogia Dam is CLOSED for fishing in order to protect the remaining fish stocks and to allow the fish populations to rebound to acceptable levels. The same is true for Dhypotamos, Lefkara, Kalavasos, and Achna. We urge all anglers to respect these regulations and to report any illegal anglers in these reservoirs immediately to either the Fisheries Department or the Police.

ACHNA DAM DESTROYED

05 April 2009

Achna dam was left to dry out completely before any water was transferred there.  As a result all fish have died.  The Fisheries Dept was requesting from the Water Dept to transfer some water from Kouris dam, so as to keep the remaining fish stocks alive, but unfortunately by the time the Water Dept decided to do it, it was too late.  A contributing factor to this devastation was the fact that many farmers in the area were illegally taking large quantities of water from the dam to water their fields. Something worth noting here, is the fact that Achna dam is included in the EU "NATURA 2000" project for the conservation of the environment, and therefore protected by the European Union!!!

CROCODILE SEEN AT KOURIS DAM

20 October 2008

The Fisheries Department has announced that it has recently been reported that a crocodile was seen at Kouris dam.  More specifically, a couple visiting the dam saw a crocodile which was around a meter long, at the bank of the dam.  The couple was asked to visit the department offices where they filed a formal report.  The report is taken seriously by the department as the couple are credible and reliable individuals.

The Fisheries Dept officers visited the dam a few times after the report, but nothing was found.  People visiting the dam should be careful and keep an open eye for a possible encounter with the reptile.  Photographing the animal would be very helpful.

We would like to mention that about 3 years ago it was reported to the Fisheries Dept that a person was seen releasing 2 small crocodiles (30 cm each) at Kouris dam (maybe alligators).

PALAICHORI DAM IS EMPTY

18 August 2008

Palaichori dam is empty. Hundreds of trout many of which in the range of 2 kilos are gone.  Also bass, roach, carp and goldfish.  The only question is: Which one is next?

PHOTOS OF SHAME AND DISGRACE FOR CYPRUS

12 August 2008

Lympia dam is empty (again).  The government officials have removed all the water from the dam resulting to the death of thousands of fish including bass, catfish, roach, tilapia and carp.  The usual fish collectors (supposed to be guests in this country) grasped the opportunity to collect as many fish as they could using nets which they then abandoned along with the smaller fish.  The fisheries department did not even try to save any of the fish.

Yermasogia dam is almost empty.  The fish are dying by the thousands and the Water dept officials are still removing water from the dam.  It is as if they just want to destroy the ecosystem.  There is no other explanation.  The remaining water is of no use to them, but nevertheless they continue to remove it slowly.

The following photos are pictures of SHAME and DISGRACE for Cyprus, a country that wants to be called European.  The Fisheries and the Water Development departments are solely responsible for this misery.  The Fisheries Department killed all the fish and the Water Development Department wasted all the water.  What next?
